✨Module 2: Intro: Where Real Control Begins
As a nurse, I’ve witnessed firsthand how fear — especially fear of the unknown — can take hold of people and rule their thoughts, their choices, and even their health.
Many worldwide fear death. In 2024, an annual study found that the top 10 fears Americans have include loved ones becoming seriously ill or dying, cyberterrorism, world war, nuclear weapons and terrorist attacks, as well as biological warfare (source).
And here’s the truth: Most of the things on the list, including death, is not something we can control.
But what is in our control?
What we choose to eat
Whether or not we move our bodies
How we spend our time & whom we surround ourselves with
How we plan for our financial future
And most importantly…how much energy we pour into worrying about things that are completely beyond our reach. If we begin to shift that energy — even slightly — something powerful happens.
✅ Our stress levels decrease.
✅ Our moods begin to lift.
✅ We sleep better.
✅ We feel clearer.
And over time? Our physical and mental health improve.
❌ We can’t control catastrophic accidents.
❌ We can’t control the economy.
❌ We definitely can’t control the end of the world.
So why start there? Why not start somewhere closer to home — like ourselves?
This module is your invitation to do exactly that.
To stop fighting what you can’t fix — and start focusing on what is yours to guide, change, and honor.
Let’s begin!
✨Module 2: What’s In Your Control?
🎯 Goal: Shift from overwhelm to ownership by understanding the Circle of Control vs. Circle of Concern.
▶️ Lesson 2: Why trying to control the uncontrollable is draining. Let’s name it and drop it.
🎬 Animated Anecdote: “Joe’s Story”
Why Letting Go Creates Peace: 📖 Joe’s Story
Meet Joe. He’s a good guy. Hardworking. Loyal. He has a partner, two kids, and a mortgage.
One day, his boss casually mentions that leadership is making cuts — there’s going to be a “restructuring.”
Joe doesn’t sleep that night. Or the night after.
In the following days, his mind won’t stop racing: What if I lose my job? What if we can't afford groceries? What if I can’t support my family?
He starts snapping at the people he loves. At dinner, he’s physically there — but emotionally? Gone. His kids feel it. His partner feels it. And now Joe’s chest feels tight. His stomach’s in knots. He’s completely consumed.
The Shift
Then something shifts.
Joe decides to take the Peace Over Panic course.
He sits down and does the “What’s Mine, What’s Not” worksheet.
He checks off the stressors that are in his control, and those out of his control.
For the first time in weeks, Joe breathes.
He realizes: All this stress… was being poured into something he can’t even control.
What he can control?
How he shows up for his family
How he prepares for possibilities
His energy, his actions, and his mindset
So he makes a new plan:
✅ Apply for 5 jobs a week
✅ Spend every evening fully present with his kids
✅ Focus on sleep, nutrition, and routine
He still doesn’t know what’ll happen with his job. But he feels calmer — not because the world changed…
…but because he changed what he gives his energy to.
💬 That’s the shift. Peace doesn’t come from controlling the outcome. It comes from focusing your energy on what’s actually yours.
✍️ Assignment 4 – Worksheet: “What’s Mine, What’s Not”
Now it’s your turn. Click on the link below and write down your stressors, separating them by IN your Control vs. OUT of your Control. End the activity by reflecting on the positive affirmations such as:
“I protect my peace by owning only what’s mine.”
“Not everything requires my energy or my involvement.”
“Peace begins where control ends.”
Letting go isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom. When you stop holding what’s not yours, you free up space for the things that are. That’s where your power lives.
What part of your life feels lighter now that you know it’s not yours to manage?
Let’s end Module 2 by listening to this quick, 5 minute meditation.
🧘♀️Wrap-Up Reflection
I'll end you with a quote I heard this week and absolutely loved. It fits in perfectly with what we've learned in Module 2...
“Had I learned not to beat myself every day for the things I couldn’t change, then I’d look 20 years younger now.”
~ They Live in the Grey (2022 film)
Congratulations! You just finished Module 2. You are one step closer to reclaiming your energy. Try to take the mindset of re-thinking what you take on this week within the lines of, "Is this within my control?" If it's not, then let that go without apologizing. You are taking the steps to do what you can about what is within your reach. If you enjoyed the meditation, then feel free to come back to it and practice a few times a week, even daily.
When you're ready to come back, join me for our next lesson, Module 3, where we will learn about boundaries.
